Program Overview:

Background:

Nepal Mahila Samudayik Sewa Kendra and Nagarik Aawaz, Lalitpur, in collaboration, are implementing the “Community in Leadership” program in Dang, Rolpa, and Rukum East districts. Women affected by the armed conflict are involved in this program. The program aims to identify women suffering from mental, economic, and social problems due to the armed conflict and support them in building self-confidence and economic empowerment. The program includes providing community-based psychosocial counseling, mental health treatment, skill-based training, and self-confidence enhancement activities for women impacted by the trauma of the armed conflict. Health treatment will also be provided according to the program. In the first phase, continuous psychosocial counseling services were provided to the identified participants.

 

Program Objectives:

  • To reduce the mental discomfort experienced by women during the 20-year-long armed conflict in Nepal.
  • To help them live a dignified and smooth daily life.
  • To provide psychosocial and mental health services.
  • To support them in livelihood and empowerment.
  • To contribute to women’s leadership development at the community level.

 

Main Activities of the Program:

  • Conducting the program with the involvement of local women’s groups, representatives, and stakeholders.
  • Orientation and training for the identified team under the program.
  • Establishment and operation of community peace centers and offices.
  • Monthly meetings between the program team and women peace facilitators.
  • Consultation meetings and orientation with district-level key stakeholders.
  • Orientation training for women peace facilitators and program team members.
  • Formation of provincial-level steering committee.
  • Meetings of the provincial-level steering committee.
  • Education, health, skill-based training, livelihood, and psychosocial counseling for women affected by violence, conflict, and neglect.
  • Vicarious Trauma training
  • Individual, family, and group psychosocial counseling services.
  • Psychosocial health and care-related orientation programs.
  • Livelihood support, educational aid for children, and health treatment support for conflict-affected women based on need.
  • Strengthening community peace centers and developing peace center as common place in the community.
  • Periodic coordination meetings with women’s groups.
  • Local-level planning and discussion meetings.
  • Regular review and reflection meetings.
  • Evaluation and assessment of the project (internal, external, and community welfare council).

 

Expected Outcomes:

  • Increased access to community-based psychosocial and mental health services, and establishment of access at the local level as per the need.
  • Increased participation of women in daily livelihood and leadership roles.
  • Women will be developed as social leaders and will contribute accordingly.
